Complete Works for Flute by Frank Martin A scenic performance of Le Vin herbé in Salzburg in 1948 gave him his international breakthrough. Martin’s oeuvre includes religious works such as Golgotha and Le Mystère de la Nativité, orchestral music such as the Petite Symphonie concertante, solo vocal works such as Der Cornet (Rilke), plus choral and chamber music. His works today belong to the standard repertoire of the 20th century. Martin had no liking for technical discussions of his music, and delighted in recalling the following story: ‘They say that a woman to whom Beethoven had played one of his sonatas asked him what the sonata meant. Beethoven answered: Ah, you didn’t understand it? Let me play it again’.
