In 1973, the exhibition 'The dulcimer in Switzerland' had already taken place in the Stockalper Chateau in Brig in Canton Valais. It was also documented in the form of a catalogue that was published in the series of publications of the Stockalper Archive, and by a long-playing record that the Ex Libris company brought out in collaboration with Swiss Radio International (SRI, swissinfo). That was something new at the time. The Appenzellers realized to their astonishment that their 'national instrument', the dulcimer, had also survived in Canton Valais, and in 1975, they organized a repeat of the dulcimer exhibition, in Appenzell. In 1974, the Swiss National Museum in Zurich had displayed all the board and neck zithers (citterns) that are played in Switzerland. The journal Glareana produced a special issue, while Ex Libris produced a long-playing record with the title 'Zithers in Switzerland'. Musiques Suisses is now kindly reissuing these two historical LPs in digital form - for they have often been requested and have since been selling on the second-hand market.
