Heinrich Sutermeister, whose opera Romeo and Juliet I premièred at the Dresden State Opera, is one of the greatest creative talents on the European music scene today'. This was how Karl Böhm recommended the young Swiss composer to his conducting colleagues in the 1940s. Shortly after its highly successful world premiere on 13 April 1940 in Dresden (with the famous Maria Cebotari in the role of Juliet), this opera embarked on an unprecedented, triumphal procession across Europe. For many years now, no recording of it has been on the market. So Musiques Suisses has decided to release on CD a recording made by the Bavarian Radio in 1980, which in 1984 had made a brief appearance on the market as an LP on the label Ex Libris.
