Schubert, Brahms und Schumann

Schubert, Brahms und Schumann

Duette und Quartette

The famous accompanist Irwin Gage assembled four young Swiss singers (all of them winners of the Migros culture percentage scholarship). His aim was to perform the rare genre of the Kunstlied (art song). The present recording includes a wide selection of polyphonic Lieder from three of the most important composers of the Romantic period: Schubert, Schumann and Brahms.

Schweizer Lautenmusik der Renaissance

Lautenmusik aus Schweizer Handschriften des 16. Jahrhunderts

During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the lute outdid all other music instruments as the most perfect instrument of fashion, such that it was accorded the title regina omnium instrumentorum musicorum ('queen of all musical instruments'). Even though there were in Switzerland no royal or aristocratic families who sought to surpass each other in cultural or spiritual matters, the lute s...

Schweizer Musik für Flöte und Klavier

Schweizer Musik für Flöte und Klavier aus der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts

The pieces to be heard here cannot be ascribed to any single, specific style. They are, however, connected through the context in which they were written, having all been composed in Switzerland in the mid-20th century. Together, they give a broad reflection of the compositional tendencies on the Swiss music scene of the day. None of the composers represented here can be regarded as in any way ...

Werke für Tuba und Ensembles

"The tuba is a young instrument in the history of music. But at the same time, hardly any other instrument has developed so much in the past decades, both in terms of its construction and in the technical possibilities of its performers. The musical possibilities of this instrument today encompass a vast spectrum, and it pays to discover them. I wanted to make a CD in which the tuba communicat...

Schweizer Lieder zwischen Romantik und Moderne

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, German Switzerland was a real stronghold of song composing, though this fact has received little attention to this day in the 'official' version of Swiss music history (except in the case of its most outstanding representative, Othmar Schoeck). This compilation presents songs from composers such as Peter Mieg, Friedrich Hegar, Willy Burkhard, Hans Hube...

Ver-rückte Volksliedarrangements von Javier Hagen

It is fascinating how folksongs are celebrated in their beauty, but on the other hand are made accessible to our modern understanding through the means of alienation and displacement. It is also fascinating how carefully the quartet deals with those moments in the folksong that create its identity. For there, they tread on awkward ground - a minefield, as it were. There, where in the "...

Violinkonzerte

Bettina Boller studied violin with Ulrich Lehmann at the Berne Conservatory (taking her soloist's diploma with distinction), and with Itzhak Perlman and Masao Kavasaki in New York. Although her principles never let her take part in any of the usual soloist's competitions, her magisterial, passionate playing has won her a large public, and she has become an internationally successful artist. Altes und Neues für Blockflöten

The program takes us to the first half of the 16th century: a time when Swiss representatives of Humanism were gathering together collections of music, such as Johannes Heer from Canton Glarus (freshly returned from Paris), Johannes von Salis from the Grisons, or Bonifacius Amerbach from Basle. These were remarkable efforts, made by music lovers so that they might have at their disposal in Swit...

SECHS ELEGIEN FÜR KLAVIER

Theodor Fröhlich was found dead in the river Aar between Brugg and Lauffohr. There are many possible explanations for his premature death at the early age of thirty three. He was beset with financial difficulties and he did not find happiness in his married life. More importantly, his numerous teaching duties prevented him from pursuing his own creative work - in his own words "a terrible ...

featuring David Linx: Colors of Time

It does not happen often in the life of a jazz musician that he is entrusted with a project of this magnitude. Thanks to the open mind of the choral and orchestral conductor Jean-Claude Fasel, it is a dream that we have been able to realize. For many years I have been fascinated by uniting the worlds of classical music and jazz. After long reflection I became convinced that the common thread th...

Il Gong Magico - Mimopera in 4 Akten

Our opera - or our 'mime opera', as we call it, for we have put movement and mime in the place of the recitatives that traditionally carry the text - is a kind of street theatre. The public - like the clown's audience - comes from all walks of society, and therefore lightness, transparency and directness must be achieved, without the music becoming one-dimensional. Dimitri says: I have never be...

Lieder und Klavierwerke

Walter Couvoisier's prominence as a teacher has somewhat obscured his achievements as a composer. It was in the field of vocal music that Courvoisier was most active, writing three stage works, several choral pieces and some two hundred songs. It should not surprise us that his primary influences were German, nor that he followed his father-in-law and mentor in eschewing Modernism. His earlier ...

The guitar is a mirror, its music the light from your inner being reflected in it: this is how I would like you to understand my music Have it exaggerate darkness and light, distance and proximity, and let it lose itself in the depths of your space and time, so that you may find it again one day in an hour of tranquillity.' Das Gesicht Jesajas

The big oratorios by Hermann Suter, Arthur Honegger, Frank Martin and Willy Burkhard are among the most remarkable Swiss works written in the first half of the 20th century. Willy Burkhard's oratorio Das Gesicht Jesajas ("The face of Isaiah", 1935) also contained vehement criticism of the state of the world and with its text based on Isaiah it depicted "the downfall and destructi...

Lieder

Whereas Willy Burkhard's early songs op. 4, 5 and 6 still show the composer in the process of freeing himself from the Romantic tradition in some respects, his own personal style is much more firmly established in the Ten Songs op. 25. The gain in artistic independence since the early songs is at once evidnet in the choice of texts. The poems set to music here are by Alfred Fankhauser, Knud Ham...

Geistliche Musik

Sacred music forms one of the basic pillars of Burkhard's compositional oeuvre; indeed, the liturgical use of his works was a matter of great concern to him. Burkhard's repeated use of psalms in these compositions makes evident his profession of religious faith, and illuminates his understanding of life. His deep religiosity played a contributory role in the fact that Burkhard the composer was ...
