I feel great joy at the prospect of what I am going to discover, and at the same time a feeling of responsibility for the decisions that I make. And I find it a shame that I can't realize fast enough the many thoughts that come when I face the empty page in front of me.' Bettina Skrypczak's answer to the question of how she feels when faced with an smpty sheet of manuscript paper is in many ways remarkable, and sums up in the most apt way her basic tenets as a composer. Her pleasure in discovery, paired with creative responsibility, speaks so unmistakably of the sheer joy of composing that the notion of hesitation in committing music to paper or even - a worse scenario - the idea of a writer's block is simply mocked. Skrzypczak was born in Poznan (Poland) in 1962. In 1988 she moved to Switzerland and studied composition with Rudolf Kelterborn and electronic music with Thomas Kessler (both in Basle). It is beyond question that the basis for Skrzypczak's composing and, indeed, her whole oeuvre are strongly marked by the Polish tradition. It is not just her aesthetics of sound that remind one of the Polish masters. Also Polish in tradition are a certain mistrust of potentially narrow compositional systems and the resultant rejection of compositional techniques that allow too little or too much freedom. Her unquenching 'yearning for that which we cannot hold, cannot experience' leads her to ever-new voyages of discovery that - so she herself admits - infiltrate her music, both consciously and subconsciously, as if this were a diary. The fact that new mysteries and new musically-enhanced puzzles are the result is something that neither she nor we can complain about.
