Walter Couvoisier's prominence as a teacher has somewhat obscured his achievements as a composer. It was in the field of vocal music that Courvoisier was most active, writing three stage works, several choral pieces and some two hundred songs. It should not surprise us that his primary influences were German, nor that he followed his father-in-law and mentor in eschewing Modernism. His earlier songs in particular are heavily indebted to Hugo Wolf, though Brahms and Schubert also make their presence known.
